Haikou, formerly known as Hoihow, is the capital of Hainan Province in China, located at the northern coast of Hainan Island. It has a tropical monsoon climate with an average annual temperature of 24.5 °C (76.1 °F). Haikou has a rich history and heritage, dating back to the Qin dynasty (221-206 BCE) when it was a military outpost. The city was later developed as a trading port during the Tang dynasty (618-907 CE) and became a major economic center in the region.
