The town has a temperate climate with warm summers and mild winters. It was founded in 1874 by Colonel Joaquín Suárez, a prominent figure in Uruguayan history, and is named after him. The town has a rich cultural heritage, with several historical buildings and monuments, including the Parish Church of Joaquín Suárez, built in 1880.
