Vandenberg Air Force Base is a United States Air Force Space Force Base located in Santa Barbara County, California, approximately 14 miles (23 km) northwest of the city of Lompoc. The base is situated on the Central Coast of California, between the cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles, and is known for its role in the nation's space program. The base has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The average temperature in January is 45 °F (7 °C), and the average temperature in July is 65 °F (18 °C). The base was established in 1941 as Camp Cooke, and was renamed Vandenberg Air Force Base in 1958 in honor of General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, the second Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force. The base has a long and distinguished history, and has played a major role in the development of the United States space program.
