Vernonia, Oregon is a small city located in Columbia County, Oregon, United States. It is situated at the confluence of the Nehalem and Columbia Rivers, approximately 60 miles northwest of Portland. The city has a humid subtropical climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Vernonia was founded in 1888 by George C. Harding, who named the town after his wife, Vernona. The city's early economy was based on logging and agriculture, and it was once a major producer of paper and lumber. Today, Vernonia is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, and it is home to several parks and hiking trails.
