The town was founded in 1881 by James McCamey, a rancher and businessman. It was originally a stop on the Texas and Pacific Railway, and it grew rapidly in the early 20th century due to the oil industry. McCamey is also home to the world's largest pecan tree, which is over 100 feet tall and produces over 10,000 pounds of pecans each year.
