Prunedale, California, is a census-designated place (CDP) in Monterey County, California, United States. The CDP is located in the Salinas Valley, approximately 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Salinas. Prunedale has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The average temperature in January is 48°F (9°C), while the average temperature in July is 75°F (24°C). The average annual precipitation is 15 inches (38 cm). Prunedale was originally inhabited by the Ohlone people. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the 18th century. The town was founded in 1868 by John Prunedale, a French immigrant. Prunedale is home to a number of historical sites, including the Prunedale Schoolhouse, which was built in 1884 and is now a museum.
