Opal Cliffs, California is a small unincorporated community located on the Monterey Bay, about 12 miles north of Santa Cruz. The area has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The cliffs are made of sandstone and shale, and are home to a variety of marine life, including sea otters, harbor seals, and dolphins. The area was first inhabited by the Ohlone people, who lived in the area for thousands of years. In the 18th century, Spanish explorers arrived in the area, and in the 19th century, American settlers began to arrive. The area was named Opal Cliffs in the early 20th century, after the opal-like colors of the cliffs at sunset.
