The city's name is derived from the Chowchilla River, which flows through the area. The city's economy is based on agriculture, with major crops including almonds, grapes, and tomatoes. Chowchilla is also home to a number of food processing plants. The city's climate is characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
