The town has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Donora was founded in 1884 as a coal mining town and was once a thriving industrial center. However, the decline of the steel industry in the mid-20th century led to economic hardship and population loss. Today, Donora is a quiet community with a population of around 4,000 people.
