Zilwaukee is a city in Saginaw County, Michigan, United States. It is located on the Saginaw River, just south of the city of Saginaw. The city has a population of 1,633 as of the 2010 census. Zilwaukee was founded in 1857 by lumbermen who were attracted to the area's abundant white pine forests. The city was named after Zilwaukee, a Native American chief who was friendly to the settlers. The city's economy was based on the lumber industry until the late 19th century, when the forests were depleted. The city then became a center for manufacturing and agriculture.
