The climate is characterized by hot summers and mild winters, with average temperatures ranging from 30°F in January to 95°F in July. The town was founded in 1880 by Benjamin F. Rhome, a cattleman from Illinois. It quickly became a center for cattle ranching and farming, and it remains an important agricultural community today.
