The village has a humid continental climate, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Chauncey was founded in 1835 and was named after Commodore Isaac Chauncey, a naval officer who served in the War of 1812. The village has a rich heritage, with many historic buildings and landmarks, including the Chauncey and Dover Railroad Depot, which was built in 1856 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
