The town has a population of about 250 people and is known for its fishing and crabbing industry. The weather in Swanquarter is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters. The town was founded in the early 1800s by settlers from Virginia and North Carolina. It was originally known as "Swan Quarter" because of the large number of swans that lived in the area.
