Sneads Ferry was founded in 1728 by William Snead, a Quaker from Pennsylvania. The town was originally known as Snead's Ferry, and it was a major port for the shipment of tobacco and other goods. Sneads Ferry was also a popular resort town in the 19th century, and it was home to several hotels and boarding houses. The town's heritage is reflected in its many historic buildings, including the Sneads Ferry Presbyterian Church, which was built in 1757.
