It is located 25 miles (40 km) south of Raleigh, the state capital, and 15 miles (24 km) north of Fayetteville. The town was founded in 1887 and named after William S. Benson, a local farmer and businessman. Benson has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters.
