New Madrid, Missouri, is a city located in the southeastern part of the state, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. It has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The city was founded in 1789 by Spanish colonists and was named after the Spanish Prime Minister, Manuel de Godoy. New Madrid is known for its rich history and heritage, including being the site of the 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes, which were the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the contiguous United States.
